Adventuring School: Semester the First (December 2009)

ADVANCE REQUIREMENTS

This semester we will adventure the notion of school by contributing equally to our learning experience. This is an exercise in intellectual trust and it is a prerequisite for our extensive admissions process that you are aware that you will not:

  • get a better job on succesful completion of this program
  • have anything with which to update your CV
  • be bored if you are willing to try or underappreciated if you engage

Absolutely nothing will be supplied by the shool except administrative support; scholars will be required to bring all curricula, drinks, foods, study materials, and spa entrance fees necessary to attend and create an educational environment.

For out of town guests, housing will be made available on the couch of the administrator of the Adventure School for Ladies, in which case you must not be allergic to cats. Other housing may be secured on an individual basis but, in the event that we house the Adventure School for Ladies in the living room of the administrator, you will still be required to not be allergic to cats.


ADMISSIONS PROCESS

Our orientation session will be held at Paradise Spa, a Korean spa in the Albany Park neighborhood. Spa entry costs around $20 per person, although you are welcome to make massage or scrub appointments at your own discretion. Paradise Spa has been accused of discriminating against non-Asian women and is also widely reputed to be less clean than standard. Dead bodies have been discovered. Full nudity is required at Paradise Spa and the menstruating may wish to keep this in mind. Lady scholars participating in the Adventure School whose genitalia does not conform to traditional notions of “womanhood” may be required to experience the men’s section of the spa. This is an unfortunate concession to popular notions of gender and sex and their supposed relationship made by the Paradise Spa itself. Creating a critical engagement with such spaces and their relationship to freedom of movement and expression for all adventurers is the purpose of our orientation session.

Scholars at the Adventure School for Ladies are among the top lady adventure-scholars operating in their fields. Still, the administrator of the Adventure School for Ladies does not actually care who attends the Adventure School for Ladies. 

Each participant is required to either lead an hour-long activity (discussion, lecture, game, presentation, meditation) or present a single text (essay, short story, video, comic, song, passive but engaged experience) to the rest of the group. together we will explore these texts and experiences in the spirit in which they were presented. All participants are responsible for considering all materials; lectures must prevision texts and texts correlate to activities in advance of their planning. Scholars are advised to consider the notion of adventure when selecting their activity or text.

This session will be limited to ten ladylike individuals, as loosely defined by gender and not genitalia. a very brief description of the text you will assign or the activity you will lead is required to secure enrollment. (final description or text is due in early december.) the administrator of the school will accept the first ten scholars who submit the required materials to the email address: artshowheckyeah@gmail.com.

The administrator reserves the right to administrate to the best of her abilities. it is unclear what this may involve because even being the administrator of an adventure shool is an adventure.

Enrollment in the first semester of the Adventure School for Ladies is now closed.


EVALUATIONS

A final (required) exam will be submitted by each participant to the other participants in the form of a performance, piece of writing, food, comedy sketch, or series of phone calls. Each participant is required to monitor her own participation and will evaluate her own performance in the Adventure School for Ladies in her own way and at her own discretion.
